Proceeds from the auction above the starting price of €2490 will be donated in support of the public fundraising campaign entitled “Publication of a Book on Embroidery from the Vanished Villages of Lešť and Turie Pole”, connected with the creation of the publication Legacy in Needle and Thread – Embroidery from the Vanished Villages of Lešť and Turie Pole. Its aim is to professionally document the rare embroidery, ornaments and other fragments of the cultural heritage of these villages and preserve them for future generations.
Some places have disappeared from the landscape. Some houses fell into disrepair and turned into ruins. Some people were forced to leave their homes. Yet their stories remained. Seventy-five years ago, the inhabitants of Lešť and Turie Pole had to leave their native villages forever because of the expansion of a military training area. What remains of their lives can now be found in witnesses’ memories, family photographs, songs, crafts and, above all, preserved folk costumes and embroidery. Not everything that disappears is lost.
