With the warmer rays of the sun comes the season of summer and summer folklore festivals. It is the time when amphitheatres fill with singing, dancing, and an atmosphere that brings generations together. Summer is when folklore comes to life in its most beautiful form – authentic, spontaneous, and full of incomparable energy. Each region brings its own colours, embroidery, songs, and ornaments, yet all are united by a respect for craftsmanship and the stories of our ancestors. Folklore festivals in Slovakia are not only a celebration of traditions but also a reminder of the richness and diversity of our cultural heritage.
Detva – a land of strength, striking visual identity, and Slovakia’s most iconic folk costume
The Podpoľanie region is one of Slovakia’s most distinctive cultural areas. Stretching beneath the extinct volcanic massif of Poľana, it was shaped by shepherding traditions, life closely connected to nature, and exceptional craftsmanship.
One of the region’s most recognizable symbols is the Detva folk costume. Its uniqueness lies in its distinctive details, meticulous handcraftsmanship, and bold colours and ornaments. Rich shades of red and blue are especially characteristic, creating energetic yet harmonious compositions. Detva embroidery features floral motifs such as tulips, roses, carnations, leaves, and branches, complemented by decorative geometric elements. Equally important are the richly gathered textiles, delicate lace, and decorated leather accessories that have become defining features of the Podpoľanie aesthetic.
The combination of expressive ornamentation, vibrant colours, and folklore shaped by the nature of Podpoľanie inspired this collection. Alongside unique jewellery, it also includes practical festival essentials that should not be missing from any folklore festival – or any summer event.
