Symbolism is an inseparable part of Slovakia’s cultural heritage. Although today we often perceive symbols merely as decorative elements, in the past they carried deep spiritual meaning. They were a silent language through which people spoke with nature, invisible forces, and their ancestors.

ECHOES OF THE PROTECTIVE SYMBOLS OF OUR ANCESTORS
Since time immemorial, humankind has sought to bring order and meaning to the world. Symbols became guides — carriers of information, protection, and messages for future generations. They arose from the desire to understand the laws of the world, to reconcile with its unpredictability, and to defend against what threatened people most: illness, misfortune, and the untamed power of nature.
Each sign carried its own meaning. Most often, they expressed protection, life, fertility, harmony and balance, as well as the connection between the human world, nature, and the divine principle. Simple geometric shapes such as circles, crosses, diamonds or spirals appeared alongside delicate plant motifs in the form of branches and leaves. With the arrival of Christian influences, the meanings of symbols evolved, but their decorative beauty endured.
Symbols became part of everyday life through embroidery on folk costumes and household textiles, as well as through woodcarving. They appeared on aprons, sleeves and around the neck — places believed to best protect a person from evil forces. They entered traditional homes through decorated tablecloths, curtains, towels and bedding. Carved into wood, they were placed on pillars, doors, windows, chests and house facades to guard the peace and prosperity of families.
